MOTHER COURAGE

MAMA-KANGAROO 032

What year did you give birth?

- 1996, 2000, 2002, all three by C section.

In which town and hospital?

- Novi Sad, Betanija Hospital

Did anything unpleasant happen to you in the hospital? What? Did anybody insult you? How?
- During catheterization "Why are you so tight if you knew how to spread your legs ".
- On having infusion cannula inserted "Look who’s teaching me where to put it" even though I told her that I wouldn’t be able to breast-feed if she inserted it into my forearm, and that the last time I had that done, I received a whole infusion bottle directly into my flesh, past a blood vessel.

How were you addressed in the hospital? By your name and last name, or some nicknames? Which ones?

- Mom.

Were there any problems with the accommodation or with the medical equipment? What sort of problems?

- Windows were poorly calked, toilets abominable, smoke-filled, classical lack of hygiene.

When did you see your child for the first time after giving birth? How often did you see him/her? Could you see him/her whenever you wanted?

- A few hours later – in September 1996 we were guinea pigs in the baby friendly program fad – babies were always brought to us during breastfeeding hours, and we cuddled.

When did you breastfeed your baby for the first time? Were there any problems with breastfeeding? What sort of problems?

- I made an attempt at breastfeeding on the third day after surgery.

Did you ever happen to doubt the expertise of the doctors and other medical staff? When and why?

- I didn’t have doubts about my doctor, but when the woman in the bed next to mine was mislead to believe that everything was ok for 5 hours, and then told that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, and that the baby is in the incubator, and that they may do a scan on his head and maybe nothing...

Did you ever doubt whether some of the hospital protocols and rules were justified? Which ones? Why? How would you change them?

- It is horribly stressful to spend time there, so most things look tiresome and unjustified when you’re confined to a hospital bed, but what was most nerve-racking to me were young doctors who came in to see what it all looked like and questioned us – I know they’re supposed to learn that way, but for goodness’ sake, people, why do they have to study me, freshly cut into, without asking whether I want to be studied.

Do you have any other impressions or comments that you consider important?

- Moms get very little help with breastfeeding, sore nipples, diet, and organization of their lives. If you don’t get a nurse from maternity ward to come to see you when you get home, then you’re done for!
