MAMA-KANGAROO 037
What year did you give birth? In September 2006 In which town and hospital? Maternity Ward in Nis Did anything unpleasant happen to you in the hospital? What? Did anybody insult you? How? A lot of unpleasant things happened to me. The first two days were ok, but then my child got some blisters…no one knew what was wrong with him, they stuffed him with antibiotics and only after 4 days they remembered to take his skin swab, discovering that he had a hospital infection called Pemphigus. Only then they started administering the appropriate therapy. He was separated from me for 3 days and fed by supplements, even though there was no need for that since I compressed my breasts every 3 hours and during the night. How were you addressed in the hospital? By your name and last name, or some nicknames? Which ones? They called me “you, you kid”… Were there any problems with the accommodation or with the medical equipment? What sort of problems? Horrid conditions, I spent 8 days in the hospital and I couldn’t have a shower during that time since there was no hot water… When did you see your child for the first time after giving birth? How often did you see him/her? Could you see him/her whenever you wanted? They brought him to me after 20 hours When did you breastfeed your baby for the first time? Were there any problems with breastfeeding? What sort of problems? Thank god I did not have any breastfeeding problems, but one woman from my room did not know how to breastfeed her baby and the nurse did not want to help her, saying that she (having long manicured nails) did not deserve help since she came to give birth all dressed up (literally)!!! Did you ever happen to doubt the expertise of the doctors and other medical staff? When and why? Sure, I have already mentioned that my newborn son was administered various medicines for 4 days and those medicines had no effect whatsoever. Did you have to bribe anyone? If yes, whom (you can state just his/her title, without a name)? What for? How much? No. Do you have any other impressions or comments that you consider important? When they took my baby away from me and administered him infusion, I had to compress my breasts and asked my husband to buy me a breast pump, which cost 5000 dinars… Since we had to take those pumps to a nurse to be sterilized, that nurse lost the rubber (most important) part of my pump the very first day… and that was the last drop. She said: "Well, it’s lost, what I can do about it", so I raised havoc and that part was found after one hour. All the nurses were extremely rude, one of them gave me broken thermometer and when I told her it had been broken she started yelling at me not to talk much and to take that fucking (her expression) temperature! It is really not normal that confused women who need support and kindness are treated like this…
