MAMA-KANGAROO 085
I gave birth on February 21, 2008 in Sombor. My daughter has brain damage, that is, enlarged cerebral ventricle due to the lack of oxygen which caused slowed mental and physical development. A week before the delivery I went to the maternity ward because I couldn’t feel my baby move. The gynecologist who supervised my pregnancy examined me, a CTG that was done and it didn’t show any heightened oscillations. He told me to go home, that it was all nothing, that the CTG perhaps didn’t turn out right because I was nervous, and he threw the reading into the bin. The following morning I go to the hospital because I still can’t feel my baby move, another doctor admits me because the CTG isn’t good. It was weekend. All night long the CTG isn’t ok, and I had it every three hours. They give me bensedin (sedation drug), CTG shows a bit better results, but I still can’t feel my baby. The morning after that a third doctor tells me I should stay in hospital, but discharges me and says to come back in the afternoon to have another CTG. I come to hospital; a midwife does the CTG and says that the beats are fainter and that I should find a doctor. The doctor takes a look at the reading, tells me to go home, and contact my doctor in the morning after the CTG. No one pays attention to the fact that I can’t feel my baby move. In the morning I have a CTG which isn’t reassuring, but I got only a part of the reading, because they couldn’t print out the whole thing. My gynecologist looks at it, says it isn’t good, but that it’s not a big deal, that it can’t be trusted, that it’s a machine, that it’s not my time to give birth, and not to come back again. That was on Monday, and on Thursday morning at 8 I went to hospital in pain. ALL ALONG I COULDN’T FEEL MY BABY MOVE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, I TRUSTED THE DOCTORS IN THE SOMBOR MATERNITY WARD!!!!!!!!!!! They said that I will give birth only the next day. I stayed in hospital, I didn’t dilate, and around 12 I had contractions every three minutes. When my room-mate who timed my contractions called for the midwife, the midwife said that I can’t be in that much pain, that I was laying and that I will soon know what pain really was. I was suffering like that until 4 o’clock when my water broke. The midwife said that I should lie and left. She came back in about half an hour when the woman from my room called her because something was wrong. I was in a lot of pain and was in water from head to toe. When she came in, she told me to get up and get a CTG AND AN EXAMINATION. THE MIDWIFE WHO WORKED THAT DAY, ALONG WITH MY GYNECOLOGIST DESERVED TO BE BANISHED AND HAVE THEIR LICENCES REVOKED FOR LIFE. I pulled off the covers and tried to get up when she noticed that amniotic fluid that was gushing out of me was DARK GREEN, she started to shout that I need a CTG and an examination. They drained the amniotic fluid, and said they have to do it so the umbilical cord can’t come out. After that, they took me to the delivery room where no one came to see me until the next shift, which started at 6 p.m. The midwives who started the shift examined me- I was slightly dilated, and said it was no surprise I was in such pain because the baby was ready to come out. BUT NO ONE DOES ANYTHING. A doctor (again a different one) comes at 7p.m. and examines me, tells the midwives to give me Bensedin for my muscles to relax because I’m about to give birth. And I gave birth at 8 p.m. They took the baby away, showed her to me just for a second, and the midwife said the following: YOUR BABY ISN’T WELL, LOOK AT HER LEGS, and took her away. My baby’s legs are fine, she had equinovarus which was taken care of surgically, and she wears orthopedic shoes and does exercises. I was alone, crying, not having an idea of what was going on with my baby. After certain while, the doctor comes, and says how the baby suffered inside the womb, that it can be seen from the placenta, that she was starting to become pink, that the girls pull out and that the first 24 hours are crucial. At 12.30 an ambulance arrives from the Children’s Clinic in Novi Sad and my baby is transferred to the ICU. None of the doctors told me what is happening with my baby until I left the hospital, THEY JUST SAID SHE WASN’T WELL, AND THAT SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED. The information was all wrong on her discharge list, probably intentionally. THAT I HAD rested until the 5th month, which I hadn’t, I just had progesterone in the very beginning, and was never categorized as having a risky pregnancy. THAT I HAD had a cold which wasn’t treated in my 7th month, which I hadn’t AND THAT THE CTG READING WAS JUST FINE, WHICH DEFINITLY WASN’T. MY BABY’S LUNGS COLLAPSED DUE TO THE ASPIRATION OF THE GREEN AMNIOTIC FLUID AND THE LACK OF OXYGEN CAUSED HER BRAIN DAMAGE. She’s been on the ICU for a month, and she spent another month on the neonatal (newborn) ward. I THANK ALL THOSE WONDERFUL DOCTORS WHO TREATED MY BABY, AS WELL AS THE NURSES WHO WORK IN THE CHILDREN’S CLINIC IN NOVI SAD. THEY SHOULD SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD WORK IN HEALTH CARE. I must say that the hygiene in the maternity ward is equal to nothing, despite the recent renovation. I still wonder how it can be possible for such things to happen in the 21st century. How is it possible that the doctor and the midwife in question still work and play with other lives? Because of them, I have a sick baby instead of a healthy one, all due to their incompetence or negligence, I don’t know which. My story maybe isn’t like the others, and I didn’t answer your questions, but I had to write it for everyone to know what kind of horror is going on in the Sombor maternity ward, and trust me, my story isn’t the only one!!!!!!!!!! (Feel free to publish my name and my last name, I don’t mind)
