MAMA-KANGAROO 156
I gave birth to my first child in December 2000 and I am expecting my baby girl on December 7th, next year. In the year 2000 I had my baby in Visegradska Clinic, and to tall you the truth, I hadn't had any complaints, at least not as serious as the ones I read about. I have heard some horror stories. I heard some comments regarding bribes and forced deliveries, prolonged pregnancies up to the tenth month, about rotting placentas and the babies’ necks rapped with umbilical cords more than two times...I was 23 than. We just moved from a small town to Belgrade where my husband got a job. The only thing my parents bought for me was so called American vaginal suppository that cost 100 DM. To make a long story short, one day I ran away from the maternity word and my water broke at home, two-three hours later. I had to come back to the hospital. Today I am seven months pregnant and my pregnancy is monitored by the private doctor who has been my physician ever since the first delivery. Since my first labor was hard, I decided to use epidural the second time. I have chosen to have my baby in Visegradska Clinic where the epidural is given for free, although according to my source, the anesthesiologist should be tipped around 200 Euros. If I should decide to have a gynecologist present during the labor, I should pay him/her under the table, between 500 and 700 Euros. My Friend who had her baby in Narodni Front Hospital, payed some dr. Jaksic (not sure about his name) 500Euros. I have no intention of having a gynecologist, but epidural I must pay for. I must say that both my husband and I are highly educated people and although we work for the police, it seems as we have no choice but to save certain amount of money and discreetly pay anesthesiologist. So, be it! Greetings to the Lady who was the guest of the B92 program along with the minister of health. She amazed me and I would like very much to help in uncovering the organized crime that penetrated our health system from ambulances, through special labs and pharmacies, all the way to the obstetrics so that the future generations could carry their pregnancies and deliver their children under humane conditions. I pray to God to help me deliver a healthy second baby and “adios” to all the maternity wards; you won’t see me anymore! Sincere regards, Krugolina. Carry on!
