I gave birth for the first time in 2001 and had a baby girl. My second child was born in 2008 in the Maternity Ward in Sombor and I got a boy. The most important thing is that the children are alive and well… As for my experience – it was close to a disaster. I had the “good fortune” to give birth in the so called “new and old maternity ward”. Both times I had very good connections, meaning that I was treated normally by the staff, i.e. they paid attention to me. Both times I had a C-section, but the second time I also had a wound infection. It opened and leaked pus for three weeks. The doctor’s explanation was “Something in the OR wasn’t sterile!!!” Can you believe it?! Hygiene: even the renovated toilets do not have toilet seats, so all of us with wounds and sores had to do a bunch of acrobatic stunts above them. Unlike the time of my previous birth, this time the windows could be opened and we could get some air. The birth: with all the connections needed to be treated normally, I can’t complain about the staff in the delivery room. The Baby Friendly programme: the stupidest thing they could introduce into the Maternity Ward in Sombor. I said “the stupidest thing”, but perhaps the right term for it would be A MISTAKE, taking into account the “diligent” staff that doesn’t check on the mother and the child nor do they explain anything about the care of the child. The only exception there was a nurse called Milica, the only normal and warm person, in charge of taking care of the babies. For all other things you have to get up yourself, change the diapers yourself… The story, of course, is different during the doctors’ rounds. Here is an illustration: in the presence of the pediatrician I asked for my baby to be brought to me at midnight to be breastfed (the babies are taken to have a bath at 10pm and they are brought back at 2 am), I got praised by the nurses as a remarkably diligent mother trying to set a rhythm for the baby’s feeding time. When the rounds were over, this is what rudely burst out from the same nurse “And you, mom, if you think that I’m going to bring your baby, especially, at midnight, to be fed, you’ve got another thing going!” Their jobs come down to picking up the used diapers from the mothers between shifts and then forgetting all about you. In the end I have to add that the maternity ward has a lot of young midwives who are swept under the carpet by the “OLD DRAGONS ESTABLISHMENT”, and to whom I need to address the kindest gratitude for helping me. The doctors work under the motto of “Long time no see”- since they are nowhere to be seen, and “Live to tell” – because we are not the first nor the last ones to give birth. And last, but not the least: the staff was abundantly (in the first time) and somewhat less abundantly (in the second time) rewarded with cakes, pastry and drinks. When I really think about it, isn’t this corruption our own fault? Haven’t we got them used to receiving things, even though they are paid for the job they do? Hey, Serbs, can’t we go without even the least harmless situation of “Should I take at least 200g of coffee?”!!!
