MAMA-KANGAROO 312
What year did you give birth? I gave birth on August 8th, 2008 In which town and hospital? In Sombor, on the Maternity Ward. Did anything unpleasant happen to you in the hospital? What? Did anybody insult you? How? Absolutely nothing unpleasant happened to me. What is more, I was delighted with the attention of the nurses of this ward, while all the mothers around me moaned and argued with the nurses for no reason, telling them how the babies were “foisted on them”, I just couldn’t understand them (the mothers)… They were moaning about the pain, the bleeding, about having difficulties in getting up, they blamed the nurses for the babies crying, for not giving them anything to eat, they were moaning about everything they could think of … and I felt ashamed for them… The accusations that they were “stuck with the babies” by the nurses were horrible… I have no more comments about this… I understand the bleeding and the paint, I gave birth too (C-section), but to blame somebody for getting you stuck with the baby is outrageous … I mean, these mothers are going to go home with their babies … (how unfortunate these babies must be if that’s how their mothers feel about them and see them as a burden). How were you addressed in the hospital? By your name and last name, or some nicknames? Which ones? I was addressed just like all the other women on the Maternity Ward, as “Mom”, which I found extremely beautiful and pleasant, because being called a mother is an indescribable feeling. Were there any problems with the accommodation or with the medical equipment? What sort of problems? Well, I do have a small objection about that … there were no pillows … My C-section lasted for two hours, I barely made it alive, and probably due to anesthesia or I don’t know what, I found it very hard to breathe, and they couldn’t give me a pillow, because there was a shortage of pillows … so I had to put my nightgown or whatever piece of clothing I had under my head to breathe more easily… When did you see your child for the first time after giving birth? How often did you see him/her? Could you see him/her whenever you wanted? I saw her as soon as I woke up from the anesthesia, but since I wasn’t “feeling myself” I didn’t see her properly, so when I felt better I asked for her again and they brought her… Whenever I asked to bring her to me, they really had no trouble with it and brought her for a short while. When did you breastfeed your baby for the first time? Were there any problems with breastfeeding? What sort of problems? I breastfed her on the fourth day and I did have some small problems, because my left breast was inverted, but nurse Ruza helped me … I’d like to thank her very much, whether she hears it or not, as they say… Did you ever happen to doubt the expertise of the doctors and other medical staff? When and why? No, I didn’t. Did you have to bribe anyone? If yes, whom (you can state just his/her title, without a name)? What for? How much? I didn’t have to bribe anyone and no one ever indicated that money was called for…no one got anything from me besides the nurses, when we were leaving, because that is “the polite thing to do”, some small things, a sign of appreciation … and, of course, all the nurses got a huge THANK YOU from me, which I could see meant a lot to them and I think that not many new mothers remember to thank them upon leaving for home … a small ordinary word, but it means a lot to them when they hear it J Do you have any other impressions or comments that you consider important? All the nurses were very attentive, kind and nice and tried to help whenever help was needed, and I would like to THANK THEM very much once again for everything… That is my experience from Sombor’s Maternity Ward…
