MOTHER COURAGE

MAMA-KANGAROO 566

My experience regarding the delivery was so terrible that I decided to write a story about it. This year, I was delivered of a child at the Leskovac maternity hospital. In the morning I went to see my doctor for a control, and she told me there are chances for the soon delivery and that I was to stay at the hospital. I would like to emphasize that this was my first labor, primigravida, so I had no idea of what to do and I cooperated with my doctor willingly. At the maternity reception department, while one of the nurses was preparing me for the labor, another doctor came in and ordered the nurse to leave me and to prepare his patient, another labouring woman. The nurse left me there immediately, as if I wasn’t supposed to labor. When I got to maternity ward, I met one impolite cleaning woman and a midwife who seemed to be fine, at first site. So, I was included the infusion, they gave me some injections, I have no idea which, I only heard someone talking that they gave me a sedative called “bensendin”. After that, delivery pain started to occur in intervals of one or two minutes, within which my head kept falling down from that drug they gave me. I couldn’t even watch properly.

Seven labouring women were delivering that day; I was the seventh one and was listening to the other six while delivering. Can you imagine my horror, delivering for the first time in my life and listening to other women in labour, horrified from fear regarding my baby and whether everything would turn out all right. At one point the doctor calls the midwife, delivery begins though I had no such a feeling, the midwife makes a cut and the doctor jumps onto my belly to push the baby out. My baby came out live and well, thanks God. After that, the placentae abrupts, and they are doing manual revision, so the doctor sutures the cervix for ten minutes, while arguing with other doctor about where I was bleeding from. At the end the doctor sutures the cut which the midwife made, and which was rather deep, since a month after that threads were coming off and I couldn’t sit properly. Finally, everybody leaves since they had their work done, I’m feeling sick, I couldn’t watch at all, nor call them, and a few minutes after, a doctor comes in to check on me. Since she saw I was feeling bad, she immediately called the midwives, and they started measuring my blood pressure, taking the blood for analyses, etc.

Two hours after the delivery they took me to a room and told me to call them if I needed anything and not to stand up alone since I’ve lost a lot of blood and was very anemic. In the evening I started calling the nurses because I wanted to go to the bathroom. However, since nobody came for two hours, I had to stand up and go on my own. When I reached the door I fainted, nurses came in shouting at me, but when I explained that I was calling them for two hours, they became polite. The following five days passed by very slowly, the personnel were impolite, nobody came to check and see if I needed anything. Only when they were making a visit together with the doctor, they acted friendly. For the Leskovac maternity hospital and their personnel I can rightly say they are worth nothing, they have no culture or sense of humanity. I can say only the worst about them. I took two blood transfusions, but when I needed to take the second transfusion they told me they ran out of my blood type. My husband went to blood transfusion department, and they informed him there was enough blood, but the gynecology department didn’t make the requisition in due time. When I went to see the nurses about the mentioned issue, they were quite offended with my “courage” to do so. Anyway, the nurses made a requisition when they decided it was the right time, so they finally put me on transfusion. They were gone for one hour, and in the meanwhile my vein broke, so I had to ask another woman in labour to call them.

A whole month after the delivery I felt like a disabled person, and I forgot to mention that only one day after the delivery my doctor went on vacation, so I was left to mercy of those dreadful nurses and doctors.  Five days after the delivery they insisted on keeping me in hospital to do some additional blood analyses, so my family had to push some connections in order for those analyses to be done in time for me to go home. I should also mention the pediatricians which were very rude, without sense of humanity, acting as if you were checking at the hotel, not the hospital. Nevertheless, there were two midwives on the department everybody should look upon, because they were really great in every way. For all the others I can only say they shouldn’t be there, doing the job they do, since they are bad people, and they should be ashamed of themselves. I’m suffering some trauma since the delivery, and I’m not so sure that I’ll ever decide to give birth to another baby, which is sad, I admit.

At the hospital they wake you up at six o’clock in the morning so that you can make your own bad, and on the nightstand you can keep only water, though some patients take drugs, the personnel are not concerned about that – they only want to see water. They almost made us clean the floor. Nurses charged of bringing additional food to babies wouldn’t come for five or six hours, unconcerned about the babies crying.

I could write about this experience for days, because it is a really bad memory for me. Though everybody knows this, I should also mention that if you want a better treatment, you have to give the personnel presents and money, for all of them are quite corrupted.

I sincerely hope that something will change for better, because the situation in hospitals today is quite shameful and unbearable. Believe me when I say that I didn’t even want to go to a doctor control there; they won’t see me there again. They had no vaccines for the babies, so we had to go and buy vaccine ourselves.

But the most important thing is that after all, my baby is safe and sound, and doing great.
