MAMA-KANGAROO 585
With all due respect, I contact you Mother Courage because you fight for the rights of women, that is, future mothers, who bring the future of this country to the light of day. Unfortunately, I’m turning to you with great bitterness concerning our health care system and its organization. As an individual I can’t do much, but I had a strong desire to very briefly describe the behavior of certain doctors and nurses. I’m contacting you from Subotica, a small town in the north of Bačka, with a certain level of fear because everyone knows everyone here, and I don’t want to bring resentment upon myself, but I think the public ought to know in the women’s dispensary in Subotica. It’s horrible… a woman has to wait for 5 hours for examination, endure the shouting from the doctors as I and many other pregnant women had to. If there is a complication with the pregnancy, they won’t refer you to hospital; instead they send you to a private clinic, so they organize making money for themselves. They don’t ask if you can afford it. They don’t prescribe you expensive medications, they make you pay 10 Euros per medication, and you’re unemployed. When you go to see the patients’ legal representative about the doctors and nurses shouting, she behaves as if it is a normal thing, and that is a part of the medical staff conduct code. Also, in Subotica there is no help for unemployed mothers. The hospital hasn’t got a 3D and 4D ultrasound, so again you get sent to a private clinic, and that costs between 4.000-6.000 dinars. Awful... well, I really think that it is a disgrace that all the pregnant women and others as well are utterly traumatized and frustrated, but of course they all remain silent. Unfortunately, that’s how things go, but I don’t know how much longer. Signed: An unsatisfied mother to be
